Family PACT Q & A

Panorama City Urgent Care

What is Family PACT?

Family PACT is a program offering limited benefits associated with reproductive health and family planning services. This program doesn’t provide care for primary care health but does cover a variety of items, including:

  • HIV and cervical cancer screenings
  • Family planning counseling and education
  • Permanent contraception for men and women
  • FDA-approved contraceptive methods and supplies
  • Sexually transmitted infection (STIs) testing and treatment

Family PACT also covers some infertility services. It also provides on-site access to treatments as well as prescriptions that can be filled at pharmacies accepting Medi-Cal for supplies and medications.

What types of birth control are available through Family PACT?

Family PACT provides contraceptive methods approved by the FDA

Barrier methods

This form of birth control prevents sperm from reaching the egg and includes male and female condoms.

Hormonal methods

Contraceptives are birth control options for women that use hormones to prevent pregnancy. These include:

  • Birth control pills
  • The contraceptive patch
  • The shot (Depo-Provera®)
  • The vaginal ring (NuvaRing®)
  • Emergency contraceptive pills (EC)

Long-term and permanent methods

Birth control methods offering long-term or permanent solutions include:

  • Intrauterine contraceptive (IUC): effective for up to 12 years, implanted in your uterus
  • The implant (Nexplanon®): effective for three years, inserted under the skin
  • Essure®: a minimally invasive, permanent female sterilization
  • Tubal ligation: permanent female sterilization
  • Vasectomy: permanent male sterilization

Do I need STI screening?

Regular testing for STIs is an essential part of your reproductive health care regimen when you’re sexually active. Many of the most common sexually transmitted diseases don’t have symptoms, so regular testing keeps you and your partner healthy.

STI testing is usually painless and might include:

  • Physical exams
  • Urine and blood tests
  • Samples from your genitals
  • Cheek, anus, or throat swabs

If you have an STI, Panorama City Urgent Care Clinic offers free treatment through the Family PACT program.

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear or Pap test tests for cervical cancer and abnormal cervical cells. Performed during a pelvic examination, women should begin having cervical cancer screenings when they turn 21, or whenever sexual activity begins.

Panorama City Urgent Care offers free Pap smear testing to the community through the Family PACT program.
